If I see one more trailer for Prometheus I’m going to scream. I don’t need to see the whole film to want to see any film. I remember the trailer for the original Alien was just the fucking egg, the title and the words In space no one can hear you scream.” and I was SOLD. These days people want to spoil everything before we even get to the theater.

Okay, rant done.

And get off my lawn.

Gender isn’t simply a biological trait; it’s a societal one. The female experience is different from that of the male, and if, as a male writer, you cannot accept that basic premise, then you will never, ever, be able to write women well. A man walking alone through Midtown Manhattan at three in the morning may have concerns for his safety, but I promise you, it’s a very different experience for a woman taking the same walk, and it’s different again for a man wearing a dress. Think about it. That’s a societal factor, and it’s a gendered one, and this is not and can not be subject to debate. If you’re looking to argue that sexism is a thing of the past, that the world is gender-blind, you’re not only wrong, you’re lying to yourself. Why I Write “Strong Female Characters”

Kickass Cover of the Day: If you listen to one cover of Gotye’s chart-topper “Somebody That I Used To Know” today (other than this onethis onethis onethis one, or this one), make it fun.’s lovely rendition of the song for BBC Radio One, with Paramore’s Hayley Williams singing the Kimbra part.

Ironically, all these covers of “Somebody” have elevated the song to the number one spot on the iTunes charts, displacing fun.’s big hit, “We Are Young.”

Mashup of the Day: Mashup artists The Reborn Identity combine Adele’s smash hit “Set Fire to the Rain” with Baltimora’s ’80s classic “Tarzan Boy” in the aptly-named “Tarzan & Rain.”
